What comes into your mind when you heart the words “bucks party”? Society has painted a picture in all of our minds that this all-men party is a night filled with debauchery activities to celebrate the groom’s “last hurrah”. This infamous party is one of the most awaited pre wedding activity that men just can’t wait to celebrate.

This notion has been going on for years, thanks to iconic movies, Bachelor Party (1984) and The Hangover (2009), which brought about controversial feedback and reviews from its audiences during each of its release. To give you a little proof of just how wild people think of bucks parties, think about the all Asian cast film of 2018, Crazy Rich Asians. History of Bachelor Party

So, where did this all start? Let’s take a trip down memory lane and remember the history of bachelor party!

First off, what is a bucks party? For the sake of those who are not familiar with what it is, a bucks party is defined as a celebration of a guy’s marriage and making the most fun out of his last few days of being a bachelor. In an article by How Stuff Works, a proper bachelor party is some kind of rite of passage of a man from singlehood to a married life, and not really about manliness but it’s said to be more about bonding with close friends and family.

You might be wondering why a bucks party has different terms in other countries. It’s commonly known as the bachelor party in many countries such as America, and it’s called a stag party in the U.K., Ireland and Canada. A modern day bucks party is widely known to be associated with naughty activities such as gambling and poker nights, and lap dances or flirting. Why?

Well, the notorious image of bucks party shenanigans started way back in the 5th century when Spartan soldiers hosted dinners and proposed a toast in honour of the groom. In other sources, it was said that bachelor parties before involved black-tie dinners which is usually organized by the groom’s father with toasts to the groom and bride.

Since then, it grew more boisterous as people learned to be more creative in the bucks party planning. The more recent traditions of bucks parties such as humiliation, intimate lap dancing, and excessive drinking & partying became a pre wedding celebration staple for guys in the 70’s-80’s comedy films.

Much later, women have also came up with their own version of this pre wedding events: the bachelorette party. Traditionally, women are limited to bridal showers only. It’s a party wherein each guest will give gifts to the bride, hang out together and have fun. These gifts are for parenthood or for the married life that she’s getting into. If you’re pretty active online, there are a lot of prominent people who have gone very publicly about their bachelor and bachelorette parties which is pretty fun & amusing to witness.

As crazy bucks party ideas continue to flourish — flying out to Vegas or Bali or some other dream destination, ultimate poker game night, bar hopping, intense night to morning parties, etc. — it is important to know that it is a goodbye celebration of the groom to his single life, and to relieve himself from wedding jitters. It’s a perfect time to bond with all his best buds, talk all night, have fun, play games, and make unforgettable memories.

  • Boundaries – Different bride & grooms have different preferences, and as the organizer of this event, you have to know the limits. Make sure to be aware of the dos & don’ts of the couple because you don’t want either of them on a bad mood if you make either of them do something they don’t want to!
  • Budget – Before you confirm any bookings, make sure that the guests are okay with the budget. Not everyone is financially capable to spend a lot of something that isn’t in the budget so it’s a good idea to get a say from everyone. This is a nice way to ensure that everyone is comfortable with it.
  • Time – When you’re done with the boundaries and budget, figure out when you want to hold the party. Here’s a pro tip that we’ve all learned from the movies, do not hold bachelor parties a day before the wedding. It is guaranteed not a good idea unless you decide to have a peaceful spa night. Pre wedding celebrations are best done a few weeks or maybe even months before the actual wedding. That will give all the guests and the groom ample time to recover and step right back into reality.
  • Location – Depending on the budget, you can find the perfect place for the celebration. It can be a private function room, a beach location, rent a relaxing rest house, or pay a party planning service that specialises on bucks parties!
